The weather is getting nicer and— while it’s important to stay healthy— there are other options for staying fit than using endless amounts of electricity in the gym. Instead of using the treadmill or elliptical for hours, try going for a walk with a friend. This will make it easier to get up and exercise, plus much more fun to keep going. Plus, 30 minutes of brisk walking you’ll burn approximately 150 calories. If you’re going for the real cardio workout, take a run along a nice outdoor trail. It will clear your mind and force you to push yourself. The average amount of calories burned in a moderate paced 30 minute run? 390.

Save the trip to the gym just for riding the stationary bike. Get in the habit of biking to run errands. This is a great way to get fit and eliminate carbon dioxide emissions and the use of natural gas of cars. You can get an inexpensive bike at garage sales, Goodwill or even  brand new and on sale. Not only will you be positively impacting the Earth, but for every half hour of moderate biking, you’ll burn about 280 calories.

Not up for those extensive exercises? Try doing yoga outdoors. Nature’s sounds and the sunshine will calm you and really enhance your yoga experience. If none of these sound appealing, play a game. Organized sports are a great way to interact with friends and get some good exercise in. Or cool off from the summer sun and get fit by swimming laps or treading water. Water is a great place for exercise because your body doesn’t feel the heat, and you don’t realize how tired you really are. 30 minutes of breaststroke will burn about 350 calories, while treading water is about 150.

The options for outdoor health are endless when you put your mind in it, and you’ll be greatly reducing your carbon footprint. Gyms are using an immense amount of electricity, and you can get just as good [if not better] of a workout out in nature. It’s an easy step to take to further improve the world. And think about what you could do with the extra $40 a month you’ll save on gym memberships this summer. You could get a really great reusable water bottle for that!

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day!  There are so many great events to go to this month that we thought we would highlight the ones we’ve checked out. Today we went to Windsor for the EnviroExpo, an event for consumers to educate and entertain on environmental issues.  Here are a few of the vendors we met:

Recharge Mower: I’ve seen different types of electric and manual mowers, but with the electric you have a cord and the manual is a little bit more labor intensive.  But with a rechargeable mower,  there is no gas, no oil or emissions.

Jamieson: A health product manufacturer that is really going the extra mile.  Their goal is to plant 20,000 trees by Canada’s Environment Week in June.  They were giving small pine trees at the event and if you planted them would plant a tree in return.

Natural Passage: This is one industry I have not heard of going green…funeral homes.  It was a company that offered a greener choice for your funeral arrangements.  They had sustainable wood coffins that were manufactured without nails, soy candles for your funeral, and bamboo clothing.  Not something I really want to think about, but good to know those type of services are offered.

Enfinity: This is an Canadian company that leases unused land to install solar panels.  I had never heard of land lease for solar and thought it was such a cool concept.  Any 1,000 sq.ft. of land can be used, whether its barren agricultural fields, used landfills, deforested areas, or unused/unusable land.

Verde Lifestyles will also be selling products at the “Urbane” Green Networking Event in Corktown on the 22nd and the Western Market Earth Day After Party in Ferndale on the 23rd.  Other Earth Day events we will be going to are the MI Earth Day Fest in Rochester on the 23rd-25th and the Green St. Fair in Plymouth the first weekend in May.  We’ll also be writing about each event.  Hopefully we’ll see you there!

Ever wonder what goes into your favorite organic throw pillows? Danielle and I went to a local Douglas J Institute (Aveda) to get our hair cuts and saw a cap recycling station!

I’ve never actually seen a small bin dedicated to this particular item, but I know that the Whole Foods we shop at allows you to put the caps in with plastics #3-#7. Speaking of Whole Foods, the one up in Rochester is going to be recycling more unique items soon including batteries and corks. We’re super excited for the corks because we’re major wine-o’s and love our cabernets. We’ve got a small collection going (see below) for the day they open up the new recycling section.

Also below this is a before shot of my hair, ridiculous. You’ll have to come see us at Westborn Market in Berkley on the 23rd to see what our new hairdos look like. We’ll have some sweet products on hand including new soaps, fall scented candles, bamboo rugs and decor pillows with the aforementioned recycled bottle cap inserts.

Making a statement in the green movement, Suzy Amis [James Cameron's wife] showed up to the Oscars in an eco-friendly gown. Made of Ahimsa silk, the eco-dress is completely sustainable. This type of silk is derived from cocoons without any harm to the creatures living inside. The  “Avatar blue”, zero waste silk gown was designed by Michigan State University student Jillian Granz. It was won in part of the “Red Carpet Green Dress” contest which aimed to raise money for an elementary school. Of the environmentally-friendly dress Amis said, “Jillian’s design was stunning and had that something special. It’s a beautiful combination of sustainability and style.” There you go folks, Hollywood’s wife-in-the-spotlight wearing a high-fashion, green dress. Eco-fashion has made a comeback!

Since we’re all trying to better the world by “going green,” why not do it in every possible aspect of daily living? Environmentally friendly home decor, fashion, and travel have taken the world by storm, so why not apply earth friendly behaviors to nightlife?  One of the most fun, beautiful, and responsible nightclubs in the world is Greenhouse, located in New York City’s legendary Soho district. Besides having unbelievable decorations [including bamboo/grass walls and a crystal rain effect], this club aims to fulfill its environmental responsibility. Below are some of Greenhouse’s unique qualities that keep it #1 in eco-friendly nightlife.  Now you can go green when you go out!

Greenhouse is L.E.E.D. certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. It strictly uses LED lightbulbs, which use 1/30th of the energy of regular club lights. There is even wind-generated energy to cover its electricity usage. Greenhouse’s 6,000-square-foot space includes waterless urinals and low-flow toilets to reduce water usage, in addition to bamboo walls and floors. Even high-rolling club goers goers make a green contribution by signing up for a table with bottle service and purchasing eco-friendly Vodka 360. Var staff wear uniforms made of organic materials designed by Edun. Next time you’re in New York City, make sure to support the green efforts because helping the Earth has never been so glamorous!

Everybody loves bamboo! As you certainly know by now, bamboo is the fastest growing lumber in the world and is therefore rapidly replacing many other wood structures as the latest and greatest alternative. Our bamboo rugs are just two of the many bamboo products we anticipate selling within the coming months.

Natural Rug

Our soy scented candles have arrived just in time for the fall rush. Each season, Danielle and I will be choosing from our favorite flavors! This fall we’ve decided on Pumpkin Spice, Cozy Home, Harvest, and Victorian Christmas. These items will be available in 10 and 16 ounce sizes.

Finally, because the largest part of our site is devoted to accent pillows, we thought we’d just show off one of them. This eclectic Buddha pillow is part of our EcoArt selection and one of my personal favorites. Other pillows in the Zen collection will be available to choose from as well.

I recently stumbled upon this video from New York’s 2007 HauteGREEN Design Exhibition with River Wired which highlights great green designs for the home. Check it out!

Haute Green

It showcases new products such as paperstone, a rug made from felt scraps, and an air-purifying system using plants and solar panels. The premise is small designers that manufacture higher quality products that are meant to last a lifetime. There is also an emphasis on nature based materials that are biodegradable and/or recyclable.

Paperstone:
Paperstone is durable enough for interior countertops, furniture details, signs, cutting boards, and even window sills.
Made from post-consumer waste, recycled paper and petroleum-free phenolic resins.
Organic pigments give this new material superior UV resistance and color stability.

Maltagliati Doubleface Rug by Illu Stration. Hand woven felt scraps.

GreenLight:
The GreenLight is a prescription product developed for the xdesign Environmental Health Clinic.
Prescribed for those interested in changing their relationship to energy systems and improving indoor air-quality.
It addresses issues including VOC, benzene and formaldehyde removal.

How it works: Photovoltaic panels power LED lights which in turn feed the plants. Who would have thought to prescribe plants as a remedy!?

Interested in seeing other products from the 2007 HauteGREEN Expo?

I was unable to find information about the next expo, so if you come across any thing, let us know!

It’s that time of year again! I have to say, if it weren’t for the presents I got for Christmas, Thanksgiving would by far be my favorite holiday. The consumption of fine wine, tons of desserts, organic turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing and all sorts of other tasty add-ons can turn any family engagement from bitter to appreciative. So… in a tribute to my second favorite holiday, I’ve compiled a list of online-accessible drinks, ready made meals, and of course decor pieces to help keep your holidays a little more ecological :)

To start the night off right, you’ve got to have some tasty wine. I personally am a red drinker, specifically Cabernet. I found this organic Cab that was rated Best Organic Cabernet for 2008. Fellow sommeliers Tom and Melody described it as “big, dry, fruity and bold” which sounds tantilizing to me. A great start to a sizable celebration.

Next up is the main course, TURKEY! This mouthwatering centerpiece is a popular item at Lobel’s organics and they’ve got all sorts of recipes and tips on preparation. I really liked that these guys had an entire FAQ section about how the product was organic. They also support Amish and Mennonite communities by buying up the free-range, organically fed animals.

I thought I’d skip right to my favorite dessert, pumpkin pie! I found this blog while doing my search for the ultimate recipe.  I like Suzanne’s culinary vigor! I’m definitely trying the version with the Trader Joe’s organic puree as I don’t think I have the skills to make my own.

Finally, a fantastic feast wouldn’t be complete without a stylish table runner and matching place mats! Here is our Porter Table Runner with a lovely review from Ari Alderman about her thanksgiving needs.  Thanks for the kind words Ari!

Let us know your favorite organic or otherwise eco-friendly thanksgiving item. We’re always interested in hearing new ideas on spicing up the holidays!

Total Read Time: 3 Minutes

Yesterday Danielle and I headed on out to downtown Rochester for a Eco-Tuesday event. For those of you who aren’t familiar with EcoTuesday, it is a small but quickly growing community of eco-conscious business men and women. They started about two years ago with the goal of bringing together forward thinkers and people who are proactive about creating a healthier environment. Their presence can be found across the nation every fourth Tuesday of the month.  At the events, people get together to network and share stories.

Yesterday’s event was hosted at Mind Body and Spirit, a health food and sustainable restaurant which just opened this past year and has already been a big hit with the locals. We had the opportunity to take a tour of the building and speak to some of the employees about the building’s unique features.

The first part of the building we visited was the greenhouse. They grow all of their own herbs, peppers, tomatoes and a couple of other greens in a moderately sized greenhouse right off one of the main roads. It has a ventilation system that open and closes automatically so optimal conditions are met for the plants. To water the plants, there is a giant rain barrel which collects rain water from the roof, which is filtered, and they have yet to run out of available rain water for their plants. There are also giant tubes of stagnant water and a large cinder block wall filled with cement that holds in heat from the sun in the winter to keep the room warm. This is a great example of passive solar design at work.  One of my favorite items though was a giant composting machine that accelerates the composting process.  Any food scrapes from customer’s plates or the kitchen are added to the machine every day.  The machine accelerates the process so within 15 hours you have usable compost that local farmers and employees have first dibs on.

Then we went outside to talk about the building’s other green features. All of the decking was a composite mix of wood and recycled plastic. The floors were all made out of cork. While some of the tables were actually constructed out of crushed sunflower seed husks or sawdust and mixed with non-toxic glues.  They looked great too.  I should also mention the building is 100 years old and that much of the building’s foundation and some of it’s interiors were reused for the restaurant.  Items such as the marble floor in the entrance way and large pillars were refurbished and the original crown molding was repurposed to change pictures.

After the tour we had a change to meet others involved in different sustainable industries.  One such person was a permaculture designer, meaning he designs sustainable landscapes (yards, walkways, gardens, forests, etc). We also had a chance to sample some of Mind Body and Spirit’s entrees, which were very tasty.  Eventually we found our way back to one of the tour guides and discussed the geothermal design the restaurant implmented and how involved the process really is (details will be in a later post). They went with the vertical approach which involves drilling 200-250 below ground. They are so confident in their investment that they don’t actually have a furnace or an air conditioner!

Cool Company Policies:
1. Servers and other employees get hired more so on their enthusiasm for eco-friendliness and organic living than years of experience. The idea is that you can train just about anyone to wait on tables but teaching a lifestyle is much more difficult.
2. Approximately 40% of the restaurant’s waste is food and everything but the bones is put into the composter. Approximately 40% of the materials they use gets recycled. Only about 10% of all their waste actually get’s thrown out.

That’s all for now. We’ll keep you posted on where the next local Eco-Tuesday will be and if you live in the area, we’d love to see you out at the event.
